HB26 is Pre-Filed. Now Help Ask the Governor to Put it on the Agenda!
With HB26 being pre-filed this week, we have taken a major step forward for the right to read in New Mexico.
As Source NM reports, state lawmakers have introduced the first in a series of bills that would prohibit book banning in public libraries and strengthen protections for librarians and readers across our state. This is the kind of leadership our coalition was formed to support: thoughtful, New Mexico–centered policy that recognizes access to books as a matter of First Amendment rights, civil rights, educational opportunity, and community well-being.
Now is the moment for all New Mexicans to speak up. Please take a moment and send a personal message to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and ask her to put the Freedom to Read bills on the 2026 legislative agenda so they can be fully considered in the upcoming session.
We are excited to see this work moving forward, and we believe these proposals can help secure lasting protections for public, school, and academic libraries for generations to come.
